Step 2: Check Certifications — Beyond the Logo on the Website

Step 3: Assess Technical Capability — Can They Actually Solve Your Problem?

Here's the test: send a drawing with a specific technical question — not just a RFQ. For example:

"This M8 pivot bolt needs 0.02mm radial clearance with the bearing inner race. What tolerance class would you recommend and why?"

The DFM test is the most revealing. A supplier that sends back your drawing with markup suggestions — before you've placed an order — is demonstrating engineering capability, not just manufacturing capacity.


Step 4: Evaluate Quality Control — Ask for a Real Inspection Report

Don't accept the generic "100% inspection" claim. Ask for a specific report from a real production batch — even if it's not yours.

Red Flags — 10 Warning Signs of an Unreliable Supplier

  1. No physical factory address on website — or address traces to a shared/virtual office.
  2. Can't provide material certificates — or certificates don't have heat numbers matching the batch.
  3. Generic product photos — images that appear on multiple Alibaba storefronts. Do a reverse image search.
  4. Unusually low prices — if everyone quotes $0.15/pc and one quotes $0.06, they're cutting corners somewhere.
  5. Won't agree to third-party inspection — SGS, BV, or TÜV audit refusal is a dealbreaker.
  6. "We can make everything" — a factory claiming to produce bolts, frames, carbon rims, and CNC hubs simultaneously is almost certainly a trading company.
  7. No DFM feedback on your drawing — true manufacturers spot manufacturability issues immediately.
  8. Payment terms pressure — demanding 100% upfront or T/T before any samples.
  9. Product catalog mismatch — offering fasteners plus consumer electronics or garments. Specialization matters.
