Pivot Torque References: Model, Year, Position and Assembly State

Use official hardware and model references to identify the correct instruction, retaining its location, preparation and applicability.

Materials/October 2026/by

A bicycle pivot torque reference is usable only when it identifies the actual connection and its assembly conditions. Start with the model, year or generation, position and installed hardware, then read the applicable official instruction. Do not average a brand's values or borrow a setting from a neighboring pivot. Salsa's named main-pivot document and Norco's Sight Aluminum MY22 assembly document below show how hardware scope and location belong beside the number. These are reference examples, not instructions for an unidentified bicycle. Missing preparation, a conflicting document or an unapproved hardware change must be resolved before that entry is used for installation.

Build a lookup key that distinguishes the installed connection

Record brand, model, year or generation, frame variant and the exact pivot position. Use the assembly diagram to distinguish the main pivot, link connection, shock attachment and axle or hanger. A common frame name does not make these locations interchangeable.

Connect the position to hardware identity using the released parts information. Note an authorized replacement or aftermarket change separately. A visually similar head or identical thread diameter cannot establish that a service instruction represents the current receiver, shoulder and captured stack.

The rear-shock reference guide addresses frame versus shock-document authority. This article instead treats the reference as a multi-position lookup: each entry must retain the applicability key that makes it usable.

Read Salsa's main-pivot entry as a hardware-specific example

Salsa's Suspension Frame Service Main Pivot Instructions, marked 298581 4/20 and 85-001142_INST_B, lists 30 Nm for main-pivot pins 1279 and 1076 and bolt 1077. Its page-one table identifies kits, rear-spacing applicability, tools and preparation. Page two adds service notes. The number alone omits that supporting information.

Salsa's current download index also separates Main Pivot Type 1 from Main Pivot 2-Bolt Type 1 instructions and other suspension service documents. Use those labels to find the represented hardware, then confirm applicability with the actual component. Do not turn one PDF's stated scope into a claim that every present or future Salsa pivot uses 30 Nm.

The reference should point to the complete instruction rather than substitute a screenshot of its number. Preserve the document's distinction between prepared surfaces and threaded connections; a supplies list is not permission to put a product everywhere.

Use Norco's position table without compressing it into a range

Norco's Sight Aluminum MY22 Assembly Document Rev. E lists 12 Nm for front triangle to linkarm, 8 Nm for linkarm to shock and 14 Nm for chainstay to front triangle on sheet three. Sheets four and five contain corresponding pivot-hardware views and preparation annotations. These are named positions in that document, not a Norco-wide recommendation.

A reference expressed only as a lowest-to-highest range removes the position needed to choose an instruction. The operator does not select an intermediate setting from that range. It must locate the actual connection and read its associated hardware view.

Keep document revision and represented model year separate from the download or access date. A currently accessible historical manual can correctly describe an older configuration; availability alone does not prove it represents a newer frame or a custom replacement kit.

Preserve units, preparation and operation with every figure

Copy the unit exactly and distinguish a setting from a limit, range or separate adjustment stage. Retain tightening sequence and relevant tool requirements through the full instruction. Do not treat a torque label in a parts illustration as a complete operation when other service notes govern it.

A practical reference needs fields for joint identity, hardware revision, document/title revision and source location, setting/unit, preparation and operation notes. Those fields do not replace the manual; they prevent a number from becoming detached from it.

For a custom hardware proposal, identify material condition, finish and supplied locking or friction treatment through materials and surface treatment. Ask the responsible authority whether the existing instruction remains applicable. Do not create a universal dry-to-lubricated percentage conversion.

Handle missing or conflicting references without estimating

If the official source does not cover the installed part, keep the entry unavailable for installation rather than fill it from a similar model. Send the actual identification and change history to the responsible manufacturer or competent technical authority for clarification.

If two sources disagree, compare their represented hardware, model scope, revision and operation before interpreting the figures. Do not average them, choose the larger value or assume the newest access date supersedes a configuration-specific instruction.

For a new OEM design, develop its own specification using an appropriate engineering and evaluation basis. The torque-development guide addresses that separate task. PremFixer's manufacturing review can define supplied components and surfaces; it does not infer proprietary installation settings from their alloy labels.

Review example: a brand range becomes an unusable instruction

Illustrative engineering example: assume a workshop spreadsheet records only a brand and a broad torque range. A technician needs the front-triangle-to-linkarm setting for a frame believed to match a named historical assembly document. The installed hardware identity has not yet been confirmed.

The reviewer does not pick the range midpoint. It checks the model and configuration, locates the position and its associated hardware/preparation information, and confirms that the document represents the installed parts. Until that match is established, the entry remains a lookup lead rather than an installation instruction.

The revised reference keeps each position separate and links its full source. No actual tightening, clamp-force result or successful repair is claimed. The example shows how a procurement or service reference changes from a brand summary to an applicable joint instruction.

Questions buyers need to confirm

Can a torque associated with a brand be used on my pivot?

Only after matching the actual connection to the applicable instruction. Identify model/generation, position and hardware, then retain preparation, unit and operation. A brand figure or range is a search lead, not a complete installation requirement.

Does Salsa's 30 Nm example apply to every Salsa pivot?

Do not generalize it. The named Main Pivot Instructions list specific pins, bolt, kits and applicability with preparation and service notes. Match the actual hardware to the applicable complete document rather than export its figure to other positions or generations.

Why not publish Norco's pivot figures as one range?

A range removes the position needed to select the instruction. The cited Sight Aluminum MY22 Rev.E document gives different named connections their own entries and views. Use the applicable location, not a midpoint or assumed brand-wide value.

Is the PDF download date the hardware revision?

No. Keep document revision, model year/generation and access date separate. A historical document can be useful for its represented configuration without describing newer or substituted hardware.

What if a replacement bolt has the same size but a different finish?

Identify the change and review instruction applicability with the responsible authority. Thread size alone does not establish equivalent assembly condition. State receiver, material condition, finish and any supplied friction/locking treatment rather than apply a generic percentage adjustment.

What should accompany a custom pivot-hardware RFQ?

Send the exact model and positions, component drawings or STEP, BOM, mating receiver and applicable instruction/source revision. Include quantities, final material/finish and proposed substitutions. Identify missing installation information separately from manufacturing requirements.

Keep the supplied hardware tied to its applicable instruction

Share the component drawings or STEP, represented samples, BOM and exact pivot positions with the current hardware and receiver definitions. Include the governing official instruction where available and identify material, finish or locking changes. PremFixer can review custom manufacture and supplied state; installation values must remain tied to the responsible authority's applicable configuration.
